Dubai’s traffic rules have evolved over the past few years to address the safety concern and to promote efficiency. Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has laid out some rules for the residents of Dubai to ensure that everyone reaches their destination without any mishap. Let’s see what the rules are for people driving in the left lane.

Delivery Riders No Longer Allowed To Use The Left Lanes

Recently, Dubai has announced a ban on delivery riders that have been using left lanes abundantly and there have been repeated traffic offences. The regulation will be implemented from the 1st November, prohibiting the delivery riders to use the two leftmost lanes on the roads where there are five lanes. For the roads that have three or four lanes, the riders will not be able to drive on the leftmost lane. And, if there are two or fewer lanes, the rider will have no lane restriction whatsoever.

To make sure that this rule has been implemented properly, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will coordinate with Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism and Dubai Police. There will be signs installed across the city to ensure that every rider stays informed about the recent changes in the traffic rules.

This situation shows that Dubai takes the traffic violations seriously and has imposed fines on the offending party to ensure they have traffic rules to follow. The fines are:

    • AED 500 for the first offence
    • AED 700 for the second offence
    • Suspension of permit on the third violation

    Reserve The Lane For Overtaking

Whenever you are driving in the left lane, your job is to make sure that your vehicle matches the speed limit of that particular lane. For example, in Dubai the left-most lane is usually reserved for those who are driving at a faster speed. If you are not actively overtaking other vehicles, moving to the slower lanes on the right would be a safer decision.

Give Way To A Faster Car

If you are driving at a relaxed pace or within the speed limit, Dubai traffic rules say move to the right. If you refuse to give way to the speeding car in the fast lane, it is a violation of traffic rules in Dubai. Repeated violations can result in unprecedented bans as Dubai traffic rules have little tolerance for recurring patterns.

    Tailgating Is Not Appreciated

Dubai traffic rules say that the vehicle ahead of you has to make way for you, but if it is not — you should not tailgate. It is a traffic offence and punishable by AED 400 fine.

Prioritize Making Way For The Emergency Vehicles

Ambulances and police cars are emergency vehicles, allowed to use the far-left lane on the main roads. If you are driving ahead of an emergency vehicle, your responsibility is to make way for them. You should always remember that the left lane is for vehicles that are actively overtaking other vehicles and emergency vehicles have the right to overtake vehicles.
