OpenAI has just introduced its own web browser, ChatGPT Atlas as a Google competitor, a search engine that has been ruling the internet since the beginning of this century. But, is it possible that ChatGPT will be able to become a strong competition to Google? Let’s have a look!
Ever since OpenAI has been launched it has been head to head with the tech giant Google. In 2025, the numbers suggest that Google is still going strong with 4.9 billion monthly active users, while ChatGPT has around 800 million active weekly users.
What Is ChatGPT Atlas?
ChatGPT Atlas is a long-anticipated AI web browser built around one of the most popular generative AI models. The launch indicates that OpenAI wants to capitalize on their millions of weekly active users. And they are planning to expand the users data by analyzing their consumer behavior as well.
It is also launched to put forth the idea of AI-driven search, which would make the traditional keyword-based search results almost obsolete and promote the conversational search engine.

How Has Google Taken This News Of ChatGPT Web Browser?
The news has not been taken well at the Alphabet (Google’s headquarters). As the shares went down 1.8% upon the announcement. However, it has not been the first time that a company operating in the US has launched an AI web browser.
Previously, there have been a few similar product launches including Perplexity’s Comet, Brave Browser, and Opera’s Neon. While there has been some initial traction on these AI browsers, none of them has been able to compete with the tech giant yet.
So, it would be fair to say that Google is not going anywhere as of yet. However, it would be interesting to see. How Google is going to survive in this current AI wave driving the world insane.
