Saudi movie fans assemble! The news is out, filmmaker Annemarie Jacir’s “Palestine 36” is all set to enter the Saudi theaters on Thursday, 8th January, 2026. The biographical drama, starring Kamel El Basha, Hiam Abbass, and Yasmine Al Massri is made in Arabic language.
Palestine 36 is getting the traction for its pro-Palestinian narrative, exploring resistance, resilience, and struggle of the Palestinians. The movie is set during the 1936 Arab Revolt, following five interconnected narratives as people across the country counter British colonial rule.
This movie vividly depicts the struggles of the natives of a land while putting light to the Jewish immigrants escaping antisemitism in Europe. The filmmaker in an interview to Arab News says that the movie is not meant to teach anyone anything and it is just to show the history that’s been erased.

Palestine 36 was premiered at the Red Sea International Film Festival, and now viewers in UK, France, and Saudi Arabia will see the movie in their theatres. The movie is a Saudi co-production alongside partners from Palestine, the UK, Qatar, and Jordan. It holds cultural and diplomatic significance for Saudis, reinforcing their ongoing stance on the current apartheid.
The release of this movie as the genocide of Gazans continue in the background raises questions not just in the Gulf countries, but in other parts of the world too.
