Got a little one who is starting school soon? UAE school admission age rules are changing from the 2026-27 academic year, and parents need to pay close attention to the revised cut-off dates. The Ministry of Education has confirmed that a countrywide shift in age eligibility will be implemented to ensure consistency across public and private schools and to align the education system with international standards.
UAE School Admission Age: New Cut-off Dates Explained
The UAE Ministry of Education (MOE) stated in a post on Twitter that the Education, Human Development and Community Council has approved a revised school admission age cut-off date. Under the new policy, the official cut-off date will change from August 31 to Dec. 31 of the admission year.
This revised age requirement for the school admission rule in the UAE will apply to all the public and private schools and kindergartens that start their academic year in August or September. Schools using April for an academic start date will continue to use March 31 as the official cut-off date.
Importantly, the MOE stated that the new UAE school admission age policy only applies to new admissions. Children who are already in schools will not be affected by the change.
Under the revised age criteria, children must meet the following age requirements by Dec 31 of the admitting year:
-
Pre-K or FS1: Must be 3 years old
-
KG1 or FS2: Must be four years old
-
KG2 or Year 1: Must be five years old
-
Grade 1 or Year 2: Must be six years old

FNC Concerns and Research that Supported the Policy Change
The change is due to concerns expressed by the Federal National Council last year over children born just after the previous 31 August cut-off, who were too old for school but too young for preschool, forcing them to wait another year before enrolling. National and international studies evaluating child readiness in cognitive, socio-emotional, linguistic, and motor skills have concluded that, although age is a factor, school readiness is a function of multiple developmental factors. The updated policy therefore provides for fairness, consistency, smoother transitions in the curriculum, and for admission requirements to be in line with age-related stages of development.
The Ministry said the goal of revising the age of school admission is fair and equal access to the early education sector, establishing a standardised school admission across the emirates and helping achieve national development objectives through a uniform education structure.
Parents planning school admissions over the next few years are advised to review their child’s date of birth carefully and begin preparations early, especially if their child falls close to the new age cut-off.
